A paver patio gives you real outdoor space, and it holds up better than a poured slab. If one paver shifts, we pull it and reset it. No jackhammer, no tearing out the whole thing. We design and install patios across Clifton, Wayne, Paramus, and the towns nearby, every one on a compacted base with drainage built in so it stays flat season after season.

Paver Patios in Wayne, NJ

Wayne lots have room, which changes what a patio can be. Most of our paver patio work in Wayne NJ isn't a postage stamp off the back door. It's the full outdoor room: dining zone, a grill run, sometimes a fire pit ring, laid out across the kind of yard the lake sections and the newer colonial neighborhoods actually have.

The ground out there has opinions, though. Parts of Wayne sit on heavy, wet soil, and lake-adjacent lots hold groundwater that moves with the season. A patio base that would survive in sandier ground heaves there. We dig deeper, fabric-line, and compact accordingly, because the lot tells us to.

Pequannock, Little Falls, and Totowa back yards get the same treatment. The drive from Clifton is nothing.

If your current patio rolls like a gentle sea, that's spring frost talking about the base it was given. The pavers themselves are probably fine, which makes the relay cheaper than people fear.

Signs You Need This

  • The yard has space doing nothing
  • An old slab is cracked past saving
  • Water pools where you want to sit
  • You priced a deck and flinched
  • Hosting outgrew the back step

How It Works

  1. Free design consult on site, layout and material samples.
  2. Excavate and compact the base in lifts, the part that decides everything.
  3. Screed, lay the field, cut borders.
  4. Polymeric sand, compact, done. Drainage built in from step one.

What Moves the Price

Square footage and paver line. Base prep is constant per square foot, never skipped. Curves, steps, and walls add cuts and labor honestly quoted up front.

Warranty That Means Something

Repairs carry a 2 year workmanship warranty. Replacements are backed for 50 years. NJ Lic. #13VH11720500, fully insured, and the same crew that quoted the job does the job.

Paying For It

Seniors and military save $500. 0% financing is available on larger jobs. You get the real number in writing before anything starts.

Why Pavers Beat Poured Concrete Here

Paver patio being laid over a screeded sand bed in Wayne NJ

New Jersey winters crack concrete slabs. It's not a question of if, but where, and the crack never picks a convenient line. Pavers handle the same freeze-thaw by design: hundreds of joints flex instead of one slab snapping. When a paver does settle or chip, you lift that paver and fix that spot. No saw cuts, no patch that never matches. A correctly built paver patio in this climate is a decades-long surface; a slab is a countdown.

The Base Is the Whole Job

Paver patios don't fail at the surface. They fail underneath. The visible part of our work is the last ten percent:

  1. Excavation to undisturbed soil: typically 7 to 12 inches down, deeper where the ground is soft
  2. Geotextile fabric so the base stone never migrates into the soil below
  3. Compacted dense-grade aggregate in lifts, each pass compacted before the next. This layer is what's actually holding your patio up in April when the ground thaws
  4. A screeded sand setting bed, the pavers, then edge restraint so nothing walks sideways over the years
  5. Polymeric sand swept into the joints: hardens against weeds and washout while staying flexible

Pitch is set away from the house, an inch of fall per eight feet, so the patio sheds water instead of delivering it to your foundation.

Design That Fits the House

Pavers come in enough shapes, colors, and laying patterns to fit a 1920s colonial or a new build without looking bolted on. We lay out the shape with you on-site, full-scale, with paint on the grass, before anything is dug, because a patio that's three feet too small is the most common regret in this business.

Pavers, Stamped Concrete, or Bluestone

Fair question, since all three make a nice photo on day one. Stamped concrete costs less up front and looks sharp until it cracks, and in this freeze-thaw climate it's a when, not an if. The crack ignores the stamped pattern, the patch never matches, and resealing is a recurring chore. Natural bluestone is the premium play: gorgeous, cooler underfoot than people expect, and at home behind the older colonials in Montclair and Glen Ridge. It costs accordingly and wants a mason's base just like pavers do. Concrete pavers hold the middle: engineered for freeze-thaw, repairable one unit at a time, huge style range, and the best cost-per-decade math of the three. We install pavers and natural stone both. We'll pour you honest opinions about stamped concrete for free, and that's all of them.

Do paver colors fade? Budget lines fade noticeably in a decade. The better manufacturers run pigment through the full paver and guarantee the color. It's one of the few spec-sheet differences you can actually see at year ten, and we'll show you both in samples.

Can you extend my existing paver patio later? Yes, if the original line is still made or we plan the extension with a deliberate border course so the new section reads intentional. Worth mentioning expansion dreams at design time.

Will weeds and ants ruin the joints over time? Polymeric sand blocks both when it's installed dry and set right, which is why we won't sweep it in before a rainy stretch. Joints that have gone soft after years get refreshed in an afternoon.

FAQs

Paver Patios FAQs

What does a paver patio cost?

From around $3,000 depending on size and material. You see the layout and the number before ground breaks.

Why pavers over concrete?

A slab cracks as one piece. Pavers move as many, and any one of them can be reset in minutes years from now.

How long does installation take?

Most residential patios run two to four days including base prep, which is the part that decides whether it stays flat.

Will weeds grow between pavers?

Polymeric sand blocks most of it. An annual re-sweep keeps joints sealed for the cost of a bag of sand.

Pavers vs stamped concrete?

A cracked slab is forever. A shifted paver is a ten-minute reset. NJ freeze-thaw makes that the whole argument.

More Patio Questions

When can you build?

Ground-thaw to ground-freeze. Roughly April through early December here.

Maintenance?

Re-sweep polymeric sand every few years; reseal only if you chose a sealed look. That's the list.

Weeds in the joints?

Polymeric sand prevents nearly all of it. What sprouts comes from seeds landing on top, and it pulls easily. The joints aren't soil.

Where the Water Goes Decides Everything

Every square foot of patio is a square foot of rain that stopped soaking into lawn. That water has to go somewhere on purpose. On flat Wayne lots we pitch toward open yard. Near pools we pitch away from the apron. Against the house we sometimes add a channel drain at the door line, because the alternative is a wet basement with nice pavers above it. Permeable paver systems are on the table too for lots with real drainage trouble: the joints drink the rain instead of shedding it.

This is the part of patio design nobody photographs for the portfolio. It's also the difference between a patio that works in year ten and one that's part of a drainage problem by year three.

Fire Pits, Walls, and Lighting

Seat walls double as overflow seating and keep mulch out of the dining zone. A paver fire pit ring built on the same base as the patio won't separate from it over the winters. Low-voltage lights set into the border course run off a transformer and make the patio usable past sunset without an electrician's trench through the lawn. All of it installs cleanest during the build. Retrofits work; planning works better.

How soon can we use the new patio? Walk on it the same day. Furniture the next. The polymeric sand wants a dry day to set, and then it's yours.

Pavers over my existing concrete slab? If the slab is sound and drainage allows the height, an overlay is legitimate and saves demolition. A cracked, heaving slab underneath, no. It transmits its problems upward.
