Mortar does not last forever. Once the joints crack and crumble, water slips behind the brick and the damage spreads through the wall. We repoint and rebuild brick and stone across Clifton and the nearby towns, matching the mortar color and joint style so the repair blends in instead of standing out. Foundations, facades, chimneys, the stone wall out front, we have done all of it.

Source-First Diagnosis

Fixing the wall without fixing the water means selling you the same repair twice, so our assessments flag the delivery problem along with the damage.

Sample, Approve, Build

The same matching standard travels: sample first, you approve, then we build.

Licensed & Insured

NJ Lic. #13VH11720500, fully insured, and the mason who walked your wall and priced the work is the mason packing the joints, no subs handed the trowel.

A Masonry Contractor Based in Clifton

Our shop is at 38 Speer Ave, so when someone searches for a masonry contractor in Clifton NJ, they're searching for the guys whose trucks are already on these streets. We've repointed brick in Athenia, reset foundation stone in Lakeview, and rebuilt front-step brickwork all over Allwood. Home turf.

Clifton's masonry runs the full range. Pre-war brick two-families near the Passaic border with lime-mortar joints that modern cement would destroy. Mid-century brick-front capes where the veneer ties have rusted and the face needs anchoring. Stone foundations under the oldest housing stock that drink water every spring. Each one needs its own mortar chemistry and its own approach, which is exactly the part that separates masonry work from patch work.

What a Wall Tells You Before It Fails

  • Mortar raking out of joints by hand
  • Stair-step cracks following the joints
  • White mineral staining after rain
  • A previous repair in obviously wrong color
  • Loose coping stones or wall caps

The Match-and-Repoint Method

1. Diagnose

Identify why the masonry failed, not just where.

2. Match

Match mortar color AND hardness, the part bad repairs skip.

3. Repoint

Cut out failed joints, repoint, rebuild sections as needed.

4. Seal the Source

Address the water source so it does not return.

What Actually Sets the Number

Area, access, and matching. Ground-level repointing is the economical end. Scaffold work and stone matching climb. Structural rebuilds get engineered honestly.

Warranty That Means Something

Repairs carry a 2 year workmanship warranty. Replacements are backed for 50 years.

Discounts and Financing

If you are a senior or have served in the military, you save on every masonry job with our discount. Bigger repoints and rebuilds qualify for 0% financing. Either way, you get the real number in writing before anything starts.

What does masonry repair cost in New Jersey?

Priced fairly depending on area and access. Written estimate after a free look.

Will the repair match in New Jersey?

Mortar color and joint style get matched on purpose. A repair that shouts is a repair done wrong.

Why is the brick failing now in New Jersey?

Water got behind it, usually through failed joints or caps, then winter froze it. We fix the entry point, not just the symptom.

Why does mortar hardness matter on New Jersey brickwork?

Mortar harder than the brick makes the brick sacrifice itself. Old brick needs softer lime-blend mortar, or the repair destroys the wall slowly.

Stair-step cracks. Foundation problem?

Sometimes settling, sometimes water. We tell you which, and refer a structural engineer when it is beyond masonry.

Masonry in a Freeze-Thaw Climate

Masonry here doesn't fail from age. It fails from water and winter. Every crack, open joint, and porous patch drinks rain in November and gets pried wider by ice in January. That's why the same brick that lasts centuries in a dry climate needs repointing every few decades in New Jersey, and why catching masonry problems small is the whole game. The houses we work on, pre-war brick colonials, stone-foundation capes, mid-century brick-front split-levels, are worth maintaining right, with materials that match what's there.

What We Do

  • Repointing: grinding out failed mortar joints and repacking with mortar matched in color, hardness, and joint profile. Hardness matters: modern Portland-heavy mortar on soft old brick transfers stress into the brick itself and pops the faces off. Old walls get lime-appropriate mix.
  • Brick replacement: cutting out spalled or cracked brick and weaving in matched units.
  • Stone work: resetting loose fieldstone, repointing foundations, rebuilding garden and retaining walls that have bellied or slumped.
  • Crack repair done honestly: hairline weather cracks get sealed; stair-step cracks through joints get investigated, because they're usually the house talking about movement, not the wall.
  • Cleaning and sealing: gentle washing (never aggressive blasting on old brick) and breathable water repellent.

The Patch-Job Problem

Most masonry "repairs" we get called to redo are smears of gray cement over failed joints. Wrong color, wrong hardness, and holding water against the brick. They look bad on day one and make the wall worse by year three. Matching mortar takes an extra day of care and it's the difference between a repair you can find from the curb and one you can't.

FAQs

More Masonry Questions

Is efflorescence (white powder) a problem in New Jersey?

It's a symptom. Water is moving through the masonry and leaving salts behind. The powder wipes off; the water path is what needs fixing.

Can you match 100-year-old brick?

Close enough that it doesn't read as a patch. Reclaimed brick when the wall calls for it.

Foundation repointing. Cosmetic or structural?

Open joints in a stone foundation let water into the basement and soil out of the wall's core. It's maintenance, and it's cheaper than the alternatives.

Chimney-specific masonry: chimney repair and rebuilds. Flatwork and hardscape: paver patios and steps & walkways.

Why Masons Talk About Spring

Winter shows you the problems. Spring is when you fix them. Freeze-thaw does its damage between December and March, so the joint that looked tired in November is open by April, and mortar cures best in the long mild stretch before summer heat flash-dries it. The practical version: get assessed in late winter, book for spring, and the wall goes into next winter sealed. Calling in October for major repointing means either rushing cure times or waiting out the cold. Both are worse than calling in March.

The Gutter Connection Nobody Mentions

Half the failed masonry we see has a water-delivery system pointed at it. A downspout dumping at the base of a brick wall. A missing gutter section sheeting rain down a chimney's windward face. A grade that ponds water against a stone foundation. Sometimes a cheap downspout extension protects an expensive repoint.

Can you work on just one wall? Yes. Masonry priorities are real: the weather face of the house, usually the side facing the prevailing wind, ages twice as fast as the sheltered sides. Fixing the worst face first is a legitimate budget play.

Is repointing messy? Grinding joints throws dust, no way around it. We sheet windows and landscaping, and the dust is done in a day on most jobs.

My brick was painted years ago. Problem? Sometimes. Non-breathable paint traps moisture and pops brick faces in frost. If the paint is failing in sheets, that's the wall asking to breathe again. Stripping options depend on the brick's hardness; we test a patch first.

Retaining Walls That Started Leaning

The hillier streets in Clifton, Montclair, and Paterson run on retaining walls, and a lot of them are past their engineering. A wall that leans, bellies in the middle, or shows soil washing through its joints is losing its argument with the hill behind it. The usual culprit isn't the stone or block. It's water trapped behind the wall with nowhere to go, adding weight every storm. Honest retaining wall work is mostly drainage work: gravel backfill, perforated pipe at the footing, weep holes that actually weep. We rebuild walls with the water management the original builder skipped, which is why ours stay plumb. Small garden walls are a straightforward rebuild. Anything over four feet holding real grade gets engineering eyes first, and we'll tell you which one you have before anyone lifts a stone.

Do you do tuckpointing or repointing? Are they different? Around here the words get used interchangeably and we answer to both. Strictly, repointing replaces failed mortar; tuckpointing is a decorative two-tone technique. What your wall almost certainly needs is repointing, and now you can correct contractors at parties.

How long does repointed mortar take to cure? Initial set in days, real strength over about a month. We schedule so fresh joints get mild weather for their first weeks, which is one more reason spring booking beats November.

How a Job Actually Runs

  1. You reach out

Call (862) 318-3997 or send the form. We do not need the whole story up front, just the address and what you are seeing.

  2. Free inspection

We come out and look at the roof. The inspection is free and there is no obligation either way.

  3. We photograph what we find

A photo of a cracked boot or a rusted valley settles the question faster than a paragraph, so you see the roof rather than hear about it.

  4. Written itemized estimate

The material tier and the decking allowance are broken out as their own numbers, so you can change any of them before you sign.

  5. The work

We tear off rather than lay over on almost every house, because a layover means nobody ever looks at the deck. Bad boards get replaced as we find them and photographed one at a time.

  6. After the job

Decking is billed against the allowance written into the contract before anyone climbed a ladder, and the work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty with a 50-year manufacturer warranty on the material.
