What New Siding Actually Buys You

Siding is the first layer of weather protection on a North Jersey house. New siding stops the slow water intrusion that rots the sheathing behind the walls, cuts drafts when it is installed over a proper weather barrier and, where it makes sense, insulation board, and changes the look of the whole house.

Installation Details and Written Coverage

Siding fails at the details: panels nailed tight instead of hung loose (vinyl must float as it expands), missing house wrap, no flashing at window heads, J-channel that channels water into the wall instead of out. These details need attention during installation. Review the specified siding system's installation instructions and written warranty together; following an installation detail alone does not establish all the coverage terms.

Siding Materials Compared

• Vinyl: the usual value choice. Modern vinyl is thicker, holds color, and handles freeze-thaw well. Quality comes down to panel thickness and installation.
• Insulated vinyl: foam-backed panels that stiffen the wall, quiet the house, and add real R-value. Worth the upgrade on drafty older homes.
• Fiber cement: the premium look: crisp shadow lines, paintable, fire-resistant, and immune to insects. Heavier and costlier to install, and worth it on the right house.
• Trim and accents: fascia, soffit, and window wraps in matching or contrasting profile. Soffit venting gets sized properly while we're there, because your roof's lifespan depends on it (see NJ roof replacement for why attic airflow matters).

Adding Insulation While the Siding Is Off

While the old siding is off, the wall is open, and adding insulation then costs less than doing it as a separate project. Housewrap goes on the bare sheathing, and fan-fold insulation board or insulated vinyl can add R-value beyond that. Houses from Bloomfield's main building era often have little or no insulation in the wall cavities, so exterior insulation helps in February, and we price the job both ways so the upgrade is a real choice.

Reading a Siding Quote

Fiber Cement or Vinyl, Decided by the House

We install both, and the choice depends on the house. Vinyl costs less, needs almost no maintenance, and modern panel thickness has fixed most of the old complaints, while fiber cement looks better up close, has a fire rating, and handles trim details well on architectural homes. A 1920s Bloomfield colonial with deep window casings and a porch worth showing off suits fiber cement's crisper shadow lines, and a cape or ranch where the budget also has to cover windows usually does well with premium vinyl.

Shutters, lights, and house numbers: everything comes off, gets labeled, and goes back on mounting blocks sized for the new siding depth.

Siding just the front: we would rather not leave a house mismatched, but a phased project is possible, with the front and weather wall first and the remaining walls next season. Planning both phases up front gives the best chance of a close color match.
