Roof Replacement

How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?

Most residential roof replacements in North Jersey are finished in one to three days once the crew starts, and many standard asphalt-shingle roofs are done in a single day. The install time depends on the size and shape of the roof, the weather, and whether the crew finds damaged wood decking after the old roof comes off. For most homeowners, the longer part is what happens before install day: the inspection, the estimate, choosing the material, and pulling the town permit.

The full timeline, start to finish

The install itself is short. The whole project, from your first call to the final cleanup, usually runs one to two weeks. Here is what each stage involves.

  1. Free inspection and written estimate. We look at the roof, photograph what we find, and give you an itemized estimate. This can happen within a few days of your call.
  2. Material selection and scheduling. You pick the shingle or membrane and color. Standard asphalt is in stock; designer or special-order products can add lead time.
  3. Permit. Most North Jersey towns require a roofing permit and a final inspection. We handle the filing.
  4. Tear-off. The old roof comes off and the wood decking underneath gets inspected.
  5. Installation. Underlayment, flashing, the new shingles or flat-roof membrane, and ridge venting go on.
  6. Cleanup and walkthrough. We run a magnetic sweep for nails, clear the debris, and walk the finished job with you.

What makes a roof replacement take longer

What to expect on install day

Plan for a noisy day and keep the driveway clear so the crew can stage materials and position the dumpster. Move cars out of the driveway, and keep pets and small children inside while work is overhead. The crew protects landscaping and siding near the work area and cleans the property before leaving.

Why the timeline is worth getting right

A roof rushed in bad weather or installed over hidden rot is the kind of job that leaks a year later. A replacement done on the correct schedule, with the decking checked and the flashing detailed, is backed by manufacturer material warranties of up to 50 years on a full system, plus our 2-year workmanship warranty. Four Seasons Construction is a licensed and insured New Jersey roofing contractor (NJ Lic. #13VH11720500) based in Clifton, working across Wayne, Montclair, Livingston, Oakland, Wyckoff, Passaic, and the surrounding North Jersey towns. We offer 0% financing, and seniors and military get $500 off.

Roof replacement timeline: common questions

Can a roof be replaced in one day?

Often, yes. A standard-size asphalt-shingle roof with good access is frequently a one-day job. Larger roofs, steep or cut-up roofs, and roofs that need decking repairs usually run two to three days.

Do you replace roofs in the winter?

Roofing continues in cold weather when it is installed correctly for the temperature. Sustained rain, snow, or ice pauses work for safety and to protect the exposed deck, so winter jobs can take longer to schedule around the weather.

What happens if it rains partway through the job?

The crew dries in and tarps any open section so water cannot reach the deck or the inside of the home. We do not leave a roof exposed overnight.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in New Jersey?

Most North Jersey municipalities require a roofing permit and a final inspection. We file the permit as part of the project.
