Roof Repair Guide
7 Signs You Need Roof Repair in Clifton, NJ

Roof repair in Clifton, NJ usually starts with one of seven signs: a ceiling stain that grows after rain, torn or missing shingles, a stain by a chimney or wall, a leak near a vent or skylight, ice at the eaves, water at a flat section's edge, or a soft spot in the deck.
We handle roof repair near Clifton NJ from 38 Speer Ave, and these are details we look at when tracing a Clifton leak. A blog post can't diagnose your house and neither can the age of it, so we inspect first. More on our work in town is on our Clifton service area page.
1. A ceiling stain that grows after rain
Write down the room, the date and what the weather was doing. Take photos during the rain if you can do it safely, since they can show a different pattern than we'd see on a dry day. Ryan C.'s Google review is one line, "fixed the leak in my living room ceiling very well." Water can travel before it shows, so we start at the stain and trace it back up the slope.
2. Torn, lifted or missing shingles
Photograph what you can see from the ground and stay off the roof. Save any loose pieces you can safely collect, because they may help identify the existing product. We check the shingles around the damage before saying how big the repair is. Our post on shingles blown off a roof goes further on wind damage.
3. A stain near a chimney or a taller wall
That location points us at the flashing, the metal where the roof meets the chimney or wall. Tell us which one it's near and whether it's been patched before.
4. A drip near a vent pipe or skylight
A vent pipe goes through the roof inside a flashed collar, called a boot, and we check it along with the shingles around it when a stain sits under one.

Skylights are trickier, because some of what drips off one is condensation and has nothing to do with the roof. Our guide on skylight condensation or a roof leak has what you can check first.
5. Ice at the eaves and water inside after a thaw
We look for this on Clifton capes. Heat escaping into the roof space can be part of it, so the repair and the attic are separate pieces of work, and neither a new vent nor a patch guarantees the ice won't come back. Send photos and tell us where the water appeared. What causes ice dams on New Jersey roofs has more.
6. Water at the edge of a flat section
On a low-slope addition, it matters whether the water shows up at its outside edge or where it meets the main house, because that's where we'd look first. Flat roof repair in Clifton before winter walks through those seams and drains. On a two-family, sort out who owns what and who gives access before any work crosses the shared line.
7. A soft spot or a sag
Stay off it and call. A soft area can mean the problem has reached the deck, and that changes the paperwork as well as the repair. State code N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 lets roof covering work on detached one- and two-family houses go ahead without a permit application as ordinary maintenance, but not "any work affecting structural or fire safety." If your repair may reach that far, the Clifton Building Department is at 973-470-5809, Monday through Friday, 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM, and your written estimate should say who files any permit and who books the inspection.
When a repair stops making sense
If it's been patched more than once, bring us the invoices rather than guessing the roof's age from the house style. We compare the failed area with the rest of the covering to see if a local repair is practical, and show you the photos either way. We can't promise you a number of years out of it. Should you repair or replace your roof covers that call, and if it does come to replacement, here are the 8 questions to ask before a roof replacement in Clifton.
Alex Z. had a bad leak and wrote this in a Google review:
“Ben inspected our roof there was a bad leak he found where the leak was coming from with accuracy and repaired it never had a leak since”
