Somerset County at a Glance
Somerset County's seat is Somerville. The 2020 census counted 345,361 people, the 13th-most populous county in New Jersey, across about 302 square miles of land. The county was created in 1688 out of part of Middlesex County and has 21 municipalities.
The lowest point is just above sea level on the Raritan River at the Middlesex County line. The highest, around 860 feet, is Mine Mountain in Bernardsville, which is also one of our towns. The county sits in north-central New Jersey and has a humid continental climate, with a humid subtropical climate in the lower areas along the Raritan River.
We serve three Somerset County towns: Bridgewater, Warren and Bernardsville. Bridgewater runs from the Watchung ridge in the northeast down to the Raritan River along its southern edge, and Bernardsville is the northernmost borough in the county, up in the Somerset Hills.
Somerset County Has the Newest Houses We Work On
Somerset County is the newest of the six counties on this site. The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024 five-year estimates) gives it a median build year of 1982, and only 9.3% of its homes date from 1939 or earlier. Essex, Passaic and Union counties all sit at a median of 1958 or earlier.
| Town | Residents (estimate) | Built 1939 or earlier | Built before 1960 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernardsville | 7,900 | 24.9% | 50.0% |
| Bridgewater | 46,300 | 5.1% | 20.2% |
| Warren | 16,200 | 4.5% | 18.1% |
| Somerset County, all municipalities | n/a | 9.3% | 24.2% |
Bridgewater (median build year 1981) and Warren (1985) follow that pattern, with just 5.1% and 4.5% of homes from 1939 or earlier. Bernardsville is the exception: its median build year is 1960 and 24.9% of its homes were built in 1939 or earlier, slightly above the Union County county-wide share. In practice that means two different jobs in one county. A house built around 1980, as the typical Bridgewater or Warren house was, may be on its first or second roof. An older Bernardsville house can mean layers of past work, and we photograph what we find before any number goes in writing. Our guide to roof replacement in Somerset County covers the replacement side.

Somerset County Winters Run Colder
Somerset Airport (NOAA normals, 1991 to 2020) shows January lows averaging about 21 degrees and July highs about 86. That January figure is two degrees below the Caldwell figure we cite for Passaic and Essex counties and five below the Teterboro figure we cite for Bergen.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals also record regular snow and many nights at or below freezing for Bernardsville. Water that gets into an open joint on a night like that freezes and widens the gap, which is why we look at flashing and joints first.
