Union County at a Glance

Union County's seat is Elizabeth, which is also its most populous municipality. The 2020 census counted 575,345 people here, the seventh-most populous county in New Jersey, on about 103 square miles of land, the smallest land area of the six counties on this site. It was formed on March 19, 1857 from part of Essex County and was the last of New Jersey's 21 counties to be established.

Much of Union County is relatively flat and low-lying. The lowest elevation is sea level along the Arthur Kill, and only in the northwestern corner does any significant relief appear, where the Watchung Mountains cross the county. The highest ground, about 560 feet, is in Berkeley Heights. The county has 21 municipalities, and the Rahway and Elizabeth Rivers run through it.

We serve six of them: Elizabeth, Union, Westfield, Plainfield, Summit and Cranford. Each town card below links to roof repair, roof replacement and chimney repair for that town.

Union County Houses, Town by Town

The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024 five-year estimates) puts the median home in Union County at a build year of 1956, with 23.5% built in 1939 or earlier. Five of our six towns are above that county figure.

Westfield (37.3%), Plainfield (35.7%) and Summit (33.3%) have the most homes from 1939 or earlier. In Plainfield much of the grand housing was built for slate, and Summit sits in the hills near the Watchung Reservation. Cranford, at 31.1%, mixes Victorian framing with plain suburban capes. Elizabeth, the biggest of the six at about 137,300 residents, has 26.6% from 1939 or earlier. Union is the one town below the county share, at 20.4%, and its median build year is 1956. Whatever the age, we look under the shingles first and give you the findings in photos.

Climate

Union County: Low Ground and Hard Freezes

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Cranford show about 50 inches of rain a year, and the normals for Elizabeth, Summit and Union show snow with many nights at or below freezing. Heavy rain and repeated freezing are hard on flashing, which is where we look first.

Much of the county is low and flat, and its eastern shore sits at sea level along the Arthur Kill. On the older streets of Plainfield and Westfield, where the housing is oldest, we check chimney flashing and valleys first, since that is where a leak on an older roof often starts.
